40.5 kWp Hybrid System Performance Review: a PV Layout Optimization Case Study
December 8, 2025

This Case Study analyzes a high-efficiency hybrid solar energy system installed in Karşıyaka, İzmir. Despite significant shading challenges posed by the surrounding environment, this system achieved an impressive 89.25% Performance Ratio (PR) and a 95% Level of Self-sufficiency.
By applying a rigorous utility-scale solar development process to this commercial-scale rooftop, we demonstrate how advanced PV Layout Optimization can maximize yield even under constrained conditions.
Below is a step by step technical analysis of the project design, challenges, and production data.
Project Overview & 3D Design

Successful solar implementation begins with precise site analysis. For this project, we simulated the high irradiation potential of İzmir using Meteonorm 8.2 (2001-2020) climate data.
- Location: Karşıyaka / İzmir.
- Installed Capacity: 40.5 kWp.
- System Type: Grid-connected (On-Grid), Battery Storage, 3D Design.
Consumption Profile Analysis
The system sizing was based on a Standard Business load profile. The facility has an annual electricity consumption of roughly 10,000 kWh, with a relatively balanced distribution throughout the year.

The Challenge: Strategic PV Layout Optimization
The most critical phase of this project was the PV Layout Optimization, where we had to manage significant physical constraints to ensure maximum efficiency per kWp.
- Site Constraints: Shadow analysis revealed that a taller building located on the East side of the property created a major obstruction. This rendered the East-facing roof sections inefficient due to heavy morning shading.
- Engineering Solution (West-Only Strategy): To mitigate “Shadow Loss,” we decided to install the PV array exclusively on the West-facing mounting surface.
- Technical Setup: We utilized 90 units of Trina Solar Vertex S+ (450 Wp) panels, oriented West (280°) with a 5° inclination.
- Result: Thanks to this strategic layout, we avoided the obstruction effectively, keeping annual shading losses to a mere 3.0% well below standard literature levels.
Hybrid Infrastructure & Circuit Diagram
This system stands out by integrating production and storage, mirroring the reliability standards often found in a utility-scale solar development process.
- Inverter Configuration: 2x Sigenergy SigenStor EC 20.0 TP inverters provide a total AC output of 40 kW.
- Energy Storage: The system includes a Sigenergy SigenStor BAT 10 battery unit, providing 10.8 kWh of storage capacity.

Energy Balance & 95% Self-Sufficiency
The combination of a West-facing orientation (capturing afternoon sun when consumption often peaks) and battery storage pushed the Level of Self sufficiency to elite levels.
- Self-Sufficiency Success: 95.0% of the facility’s total annual energy demand is met entirely by the solar system and battery. Reliance on the grid is minimized.
- Grid Export: Due to the high installed power (40.5 kWp) relative to consumption, the system exports 52,732 kWh of excess energy back to the grid annually, generating significant revenue.

The Karşıyaka project serves as a definitive Case Study on how to overcome physical constraints like “East side building obstruction” through advanced engineering. By utilizing PV Layout Optimization to prioritize the West facade, we achieved a Specific Annual Yield of 1,541 kWh/kWp and a 95% self-sufficiency rate. This proves that applying a utility-scale solar development process mindset to commercial projects yields superior results.
