Same Roof, Same Panels, 8% More Energy: The Return of the “South” Legend on Flat Roofs

December 17, 2025

When investing in solar energy, the first question on everyone’s mind is clear: “How do I get the maximum efficiency from my roof?”

Especially if you own a property with a flat roof, there is a standard prescription offered to you in the industry: “Let’s place the panels in an East-West orientation, back-to-back. This way, we use the roof area more densely and spread production throughout the day by catching both morning and evening sun.” This is a method that is logically sound on paper, safe, and has been applied for years. However, at Lion Solar, we do not act on memorized prescriptions, but on data-driven simulations.

In our latest Case Study, we tested this generally accepted rule using Lion Solar engineering and PV*SOL simulation technology. The results proved that when the right equipment and smart storage solutions come together, a South-oriented installation earns the investor significantly more than the East-West system.

In this article, we transparently put two different scenarios (East-West Installation vs. South Installation) on the table, realized in Reichenbach, Switzerland, using identical hardware specifications.

The Foundation of the Case Study: A Race on Equal Terms

To ensure a fair comparison, we used “Digital Twin” technology in both scenarios and fixed the variables. Here are the constants in our laboratory environment:

  • Location: Switzerland.
  • System Type: 3D, Grid-connected PV System with Electrical Appliances and Battery Systems.
  • Total Power: 17.80 kWp.
  • Number and Model of Panels: 40 Units Trina Solar TSM-445-NEG9RC.27 VERTEX S+ (445 Wp).
  • Inverter: 1 Unit Huawei Technologies SUN2000-17K-MB0.
  • Battery Capacity: 15 kWh (Huawei LUNA2000-15-S0).
  • Annual Consumption: 15,000 kWh.

There was only one difference: The Orientation of the Panels. In the first scenario, we placed the panels facing East and West

(Case 1).

In the second scenario, we turned all panels to face directly South with an azimuth of 182° (Case 2).

Round 1: Total Energy Production (Yield)

The Overwhelming Superiority of the South Facing

Solar panels operate at maximum efficiency when they receive sunlight at the steepest possible angle. In the Northern Hemisphere, this is the “South” facade. However, on flat roofs, turning panels south increases the risk of panels casting shadows on each other.

We encountered an interesting data point in our analysis:

  • East-West System (Case 1): The yield reduction due to shading was 9.8%.
  • South System (Case 2): Due to panel-on-panel shading, this rate rose to 12.3%.

Under normal conditions, more shade means less production, right? Wrong. The light intensity advantage of the South orientation is so high that it not only tolerates the increased shading loss but also adds a significant production difference on top of it.

  • East-West Production: 19,067 kWh/Year.
  • South Production: 20,539 kWh/Year.

The South system designed by Lion Solar produced approximately 1,500 kWh more electricity annually with the exact same number of panels. This is equivalent to the energy required for an electric vehicle to travel approximately 10,000 km. The biggest factor in creating this difference was that the South system reached a specific annual yield of 1,176.60 kWh/kWp , whereas in the East-West system, this figure remained at 1,093.25 kWh/kWp.

Round 2: Self-Consumption and Grid Independence

The Moment the Battery Changed the Game

According to traditional views, South systems have a “bad” reputation: They produce too much electricity at noon when no one is home, and production stops in the evening when everyone returns. This imbalance causes most of the generated energy to be sold to the grid at a cheap price, while expensive electricity is bought from the grid in the evening.

However, the 15 kWh capacity Huawei LUNA2000 battery system integrated into this project by Lion Solar changed this equation fundamentally.

Our simulation results show how battery technology eliminates orientation disadvantages:

  • East-West System Level of Self-sufficiency: 71.2%.
  • South System Level of Self-sufficiency: 71.4%.

The South system stored the “surplus” energy (Peak Power) produced during noon hours in the batteries, transferring it for evening use. Thus, in terms of meeting the house’s energy needs, it performed at the same high rate even slightly higher (71.4%) as the East-West system, which is claimed to be more balanced. In other words, the myth that “if you install a South system, you will be left without electricity in the evening” has become history with the right battery engineering.

Round 3: Commercial Gain (Grid Export)

An Extra 1,450+ kWh of Sales

A solar energy system should not only zero out your bill but also make you money. After the house’s consumption needs (15,000 kWh) and battery charging are completed, the remaining energy is sold to the grid. This is one of the most critical items shortening the Return on Investment (ROI).

Here is the table where the Lion Solar difference is most clearly seen:

  • East-West System Grid Export: 8,368 kWh/Year.
  • South System Grid Export: 9,821 kWh/Year.
Case 1

After meeting all the needs of the house, the South system sold 1,453 kWh more energy to the grid compared to the East-West scenario. Considering a 25-year system life, this means over 36,000 kWh of additional energy sales. By simply planning the orientation of the panels correctly and using the right storage solution, we created a massive additional revenue stream for our investor without any extra hardware costs.

Environmental Impact: A Greener Future

The environmental dimension of the investment is as important to us as the financial dimension. Higher efficiency means less carbon emission.

  • While the East-West system avoids 7,078 kg of CO2 emissions annually,
  • The South system achieved 7,633 kg of CO2 avoidance annually.

Emitting 555 kg less carbon into the atmosphere every year is an extra gift to our planet provided by a choice made with Lion Solar.

Trust Data, Not Standards

This case study proves that there is no “single truth” in the solar energy sector and that every project must be designed specifically within its own dynamics. If the standard approach had been taken in this project and an East-West installation was carried out, the investor would have spent the same amount of money but:

  1. Would have produced approximately 1,500 kWh less energy annually,
  2. Would have been deprived of approximately 17% of the revenue from grid sales,
  3. Would not have been able to use their system’s potential to full capacity.

As Lion Solar, we solved the problem of “flat roof orientation and efficiency dilemmas” by implementing “advanced simulation technology, a South oriented maximum production strategy, and hybrid battery integration.”

We want to install an energy plant on your roof that extracts maximum efficiency from every single solar cell, not a system working below its potential. Believe in the power of engineering, do not leave your energy to chance.
