Beyond the Roof: Panasonic Tests Glass Based Perovskite Solar Windows

December 3, 2025

The solar energy industry is going through big changes. For many years, most people only saw standard silicon solar panels on rooftops and houses. But, as many people know, we now have solar windows to put on the sides of buildings and houses. Solar windows can transform the glass on buildings and sell the energy the windows absorb as well. This market is being explored and developed by the collaboration of Mitsubishi, YKK AP and Lion Solar.

At Lion Solar, we are tracking the progress of solar perovskites, as with every step forward we’ll have to step up on the electrical engineering and system design.

What is Progressing With Panasonic and YKK AP

Recent industry articles make known that the office buildings of YKK AP business have integrated solar perovskite windows. This means that the made windows of buildings are now able to generate energy!

The next piloting focuses on “inner windows” with weather-proof wood and sash frames. Unlike the opaque solar panels people are used to, these solar windows blend in with the architecture of the buildings and are both beautiful and energizing.

The main features being tested are:

Glass Customization: With the most recent innovative technology of glass control (for solar windows), the transparency of the glass can be controlled. This means that some windows can be kept entirely see-through or have decorative opaque glass added to the window.

More Efficient Solar Panels (perovskite material): This means that architects will be able to provide their vision with solar panels on buildings, as less sunlight will be wasted. This is a big thing to provide for architects as a lot of perovskite material is super flexible!

Efficiency: Panasonic has received verification for an efficiency of 18.1 percent for their 800 cm glass-based perovskite devices, proving that these devices can be an energy source.

Why Perovskite is the ‘Next Big Thing’

Perovskite
Structure of glass-based perovskite solar cells used in transparent office windows by Panasonic

Perovskite is a unique crystal structure that has extraordinary light absorption capability. In the context of solar technology, perovskite has benefits that are revolutionizing the BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) industry:

Aesthetics: Perovskite can be made to be either transparent or can be made to a specific colour, ideal for building facades and windows.

Low Light Performance: The solar perovskite cells perform better than their silicon counterparts in diffuse light hence optimal voltage output can be obtained.

Light Weight: Perovskite solar cells can be laminated to a window, making them ideal for building structures that are not designed for heavy, glass solar laminated windows.

The Engineering Challenge: Where Lion Solar Comes In.

While Panasonic refines the chemistry, the challenge with solar cells is in the engineering. Integrating the electrical architecture of a building is modified completely when a window is converted into a power generating system.

This is the reason BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) engineering is the primary focus of Lion Solar Solutions. As perovskite is the first of its kind to move from the laboratory to construction, efficient electrical engineering is paramount.

How We Prepare for the Future

The engineering challenge with integrating solar cells into building materials (windows, facades) is sophisticated:

  • Complex Routing of Wiring: Where and how can one safely route the DC power cables through a window frame that can open and close?
  • Safety & Protection: Designing Vertical Array Protection Systems for people in vertical access spaces.
  • Inverter Compatibility: Aligning the specific voltage adaptabilities of the inverters with perovskite modules.

Whether it is a sizable rooftop plant today or a perovskite glass facade tomorrow, the principle requirement stays the same: Resilient, compliant, and optimized electrical project design.

The Panasonic and YKK AP test is a glimpse into a future where every surface of a building generates clean energy. At Lion Solar Solutions, we are excited to see perovskite solar technology mature.

We are ready to support investors, architects, and EPCs with the advanced electrical engineering required to bring these next-generation projects to life.
